Planning Your Fall Break in Myrtle Beach

Planning a fall break and looking for the perfect location? Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is still in full swing going into the autumn and the perfect spot for a week long getaway. The boardwalk is still lit up and lively after dark, Ocean Boulevard still smells like funnel cake and salt air, and mini golf is waiting for a round before dinner.

While summer certainly has its fair share of festivals, live music, and seasonal events, they save some for fall as well! From the Fall Taste of The Market Common to Crooktoberfest and Halloween activities, there's plenty to round out the itinerary!

If you’re planning a fall visit in Myrtle Beach, here’s what to know about the weather, what’s happening around town, what to pack, and how to make the most of a few autumn days at an oceanfront getaway.

Fall Weather in Myrtle Beach

Fall break weather along the Grand Strand is in the sweet spot for the East Coast. Daytime highs fall in the mid-70s to low 80s in late September and early October, then drop to the upper 60s and low 70s by late October and a little more in November. Good news for beach lovers - water temperatures stay in the mid-70s for most of the season!

Fall Break Activities in Myrtle Beach

The bonus for activities in the fall? You'll find fewer crowds at the most coveted spots and possibly easier parking! There's plenty to see, do, and explore going into the autumn on a Myrtle Beach vacation.

Walk the Boardwalk and Explore Oceanfront Attractions

While summer gets a lot of hype, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is kind of made for fall. Cooler temps turn the mile-and-a-half stretch on the old school boardwalk into an easy walk or bike ride past arcades, ice cream shops, and ocean views the whole way.

The SkyWheel runs year-round and offers some of the best views of fall sunsets and the coastline. Ripley's Believe It or Not and the aquarium are open and ready to entertain, and the arcade is always a great stop after dinner.

Golf the Grand Strand's Best Courses

If you're a golfer, you know there's something special about a fall day on the back nine. There's no better place to hit the greens in Myrtle Beach for the championship courses the area offers.

Just a short drive from hotel BLUE, check out:

  • Whispering Pines Golf Course: A public course through longleaf pines just south of the Boardwalk.

  • Indian Wells Golf Club: A Gene Hamm-designed course in nearby Surfside Beach, known for its water hazards and a finishing hole famously known as one of the toughest on the Grand Strand!

Both welcome walk-in tee times year-round, making it easy to squeeze in a round between beach mornings and boardwalk evenings.

Biking, Hiking, and Outdoor Adventures

Fall's comfy temps make it a great season to get moving outdoors. Myrtle Beach State Park offers nature trails, a fishing pier, and a quieter stretch of beach that's excellent for younger kids.

A little further south, Huntington Beach State Park adds beautiful boardwalk trails through maritime forest and salt marsh, plus some of the best birdwatching on the coast!

Family-Friendly Fun at Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing

When you are trying to meet the needs of everyone in the group, a place with everything is the best shot at pleasing all! Broadway at the Beach brings shops, restaurants, and entertainment together in one easy to move around spot. It's good for an afternoon when the family wants a mix of options in one place.

Barefoot Landing, up in North Myrtle Beach, offers its own waterfront shopping and dining, along with live music and seasonal events, including BooFest, a family costume contest for kids and pets held in Dockside Village, and a Trick or Treat evening closer to Halloween!

Explore the Lowcountry Zoo and Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens, just south of Myrtle Beach, is part botanical garden, part outdoor art museum, and part wildlife preserve, with enormous live oaks, winding paths for leisurely strolling, and thousands of sculptures tucked throughout.

Inside the gardens, you'll find the Lowcountry Zoo, where you’ll see everything from river otters and alligators to foxes, owls, and other species.

If you're visiting in early October, check the calendar for Harvest Home Weekend, Brookgreen's annual fall celebration with pumpkin decorating, scarecrow building, a hay maze, live music, and other family activities.

Beachcombing, Shelling

Fall is a great time to slow down and explore the Myrtle Beach shoreline on foot. A leveled-up stroll can yield many treasures, including regional shells, shark teeth, driftwood, and other small finds washing up along the South Carolina coast.

For the best shelling, head out around low tide, especially in the morning, and look towards the shoreline. Keep an eye out for lettered olives, scallops, whelks, and coquina shells. You might even spot one of the fossilized shark teeth the Grand Strand is known for.

A few good places to try:

  • Myrtle Beach State Park: A more natural stretch of shoreline with plenty of room for a long beachcombing walk.

  • The Golden Mile: This residential section of Myrtle Beach offers a long, uninterrupted shoreline that’s particularly nice for an early morning shell hunt.

  • Cherry Grove Beach: Great for hunting for shark teeth, particularly near the Cherry Grove Pier.

Take a Dip in Your Resort’s Heated Pool

A fall holiday at the beach should still involve a swimsuit. Many Myrtle Beach resorts keep the fun going with heated pools, so visitors can fit in a swim between a morning on the beach and a night out in Myrtle Beach.

At hotel BLUE, the oceanfront pool is heated seasonally, making it an easy place to sneak in a little more pool time. And when the temperature dips, the indoor lazy river is always a good excuse to take a dip.

Fall Events and Festivals in Myrtle Beach

Fall along the Grand Strand is festive with plenty of festivals, food, and live music. Exact dates shift from year to year, so it's worth checking each event's website closer to a trip!

  • Harvest Home Weekend (October): Brookgreen Gardens hosts a family festival with pumpkin painting, scarecrow building, and hayrides through the gardens.

  • Myrtle Beach Greek Festival (October): A weekend of Greek food, music, and dancing at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, popular with families looking for something beyond the standard boardwalk fare.

  • Little River ShrimpFest (October): A waterfront seafood festival in Little River, with live music and dozens of vendors celebrating the area's fishing heritage.

  • Crooktoberfest (September–October): Crooked Hammock Brewery at Barefoot Landing turns its backyard beer garden into a weeks-long Bavarian-style celebration, with seasonal brews, German-inspired food, live music, and lawn games.

  • Fall Taste of The Market Common (October): A food-lover's ideal afternoon featuring bites, sips, and sweets from dozens of Market Common restaurants, with kid’s entertainment.

What to Pack

Packing for fall break in Myrtle Beach comes down to one simple idea: layers.

  • Swimsuit: For the ocean or the indoor heated pool.

  • Light jacket or hoodie: For the evenings.

  • Shorts and t-shirts: Still the go-to for sunny fall afternoons.

  • Comfortable walking shoes: For the boardwalk, state park trails, and Brookgreen Gardens.

  • Sunscreen: UV exposure stays moderate well into fall.

  • A reusable water bottle: Handy for beach days, hikes, and golf outings.
